How it works, what to do when it doesn’t, and how to reach a human.

Email support@yawp.rest and you will get a reply from the person who wrote the app.

It helps to say which strap you use, your iPhone model and iOS version, and what you saw instead of what you expected.

Getting started

  1. Wet the strap’s contacts and put it on. A dry strap reads nothing, and this is the cause of most “it won’t connect” reports.
  2. Open Yawp and allow Bluetooth. It scans straight away.
  3. Pick your strap from the list. Yawp remembers it and reconnects on its own from then on.
  4. Wear it for a few days. Readiness and the trends are measured against your own baseline, and a baseline needs a week or so of nights before it means anything.

Questions

Which straps work?

Any strap that speaks the standard Bluetooth Heart Rate Service (0x180D) — including WHOOP 4.0, Polar H10, Garmin HRM and most chest straps of the last decade. For HRV you also need a strap that reports beat-to-beat (RR) intervals; nearly all chest straps do.

Does it track my sleep overnight?

Yes. Leave Yawp running in the background — swiping it closed from the app switcher stops it reconnecting. It holds the Bluetooth link through the night and reconstructs the night in the morning.

How accurate are the sleep stages?

They are estimates. REM, light and deep are inferred from your heart rate and heart-rate variability, which is what a strap can actually see — only a sleep lab measures stages directly. The app labels them “estimated” wherever they appear. Treat the shape and the trend as useful and the exact minutes as approximate.

My strap connects, then the readings stop.

Usually the strap: contacts dried out, it slipped, or the battery is low. Re-wet the contacts and check the battery figure on the Today screen. If it keeps happening on a strap you know is good, email us — include roughly when it stopped and we can tell you what the app saw.

Nothing shows up at all.

Check Settings ▸ Yawp ▸ Bluetooth is on. Check the strap isn’t already connected to its manufacturer’s own app — most straps accept only one connection at a time, so quit the other app first. Then force-quit Yawp and reopen it.

Where is my data, and can I get it out?

On your phone, in the app’s own storage, and nowhere else unless you switch on iCloud backup. To take a copy out, tap ••• at the top right and choose Export a copy to Files — you get the whole database, every reading, in a format anything can open. See the privacy page for exactly what is stored.

I paid, and a new phone wants me to pay again.

Open the purchase screen and tap Restore purchase. It is one purchase, tied to your Apple Account, and it is not a subscription — there is nothing to renew or cancel.

Does it need an internet connection?

No. Everything is computed on the phone. With iCloud backup switched off, the app makes no network connections at all.

Can I use it with Apple Health?

Yes, in both directions, and both are optional. Yawp writes heart rate, resting heart rate, HRV and sleep to Health, and reads your step count if you allow it. Nothing else is ever read.

Reporting something broken

Yawp has no crash reporting and no analytics, which is a deliberate privacy choice and does mean we only learn about a bug if you tell us. A short email with what you did and what happened is genuinely useful.
